The Little Things | Houston Children’s Photographer

We went to Enchanted Manor Meadery yesterday, for a Mead-Making class. Well, my husband participated in the class while I played with Baby O outside. It was such a beautiful day, and such a fantastic business. We really enjoyed our little day-trip to Magnolia for the occasion. Baby O really enjoyed the sights and smells around the property…acorns, rocks, gourds, scented flowers, and this very cool pumpkin…

This past weekend we also had a wonderful tree-service company (seriously, they are very professional and all-around fantastic, should you live in Houston and want a referral) come to remove a few trees and trim branches away from the house, etc. When they were packing up at the end of the day, my husband noticed they had bags full of pecans from the pecan tree they were trimming for us. He asked them what they do with them and they enthusiastically explained that they like to toast the pecans for the Holidays – that they’re a real treat. It seems so obvious, honestly, but my husband and I were really impressed. Here we had been complaining about how the branches were coming over the rooftop and dropping pecans on the roof, how the cracked shells litter the lawn, etc. We really hadn’t been appreciating the fact that we have a pecan tree, one that is very bountiful nonetheless. And, well, that’s kind of neat! The next morning we cleaned up the lawn and had Baby O help us collect the pecans in a wooden bowl. We cracked several open and ate them while we worked.

We marveled at how pretty the inner shells look – with their own unique “grain”.And our Meyer Lemon tree has some promising fruit as well. This one (below) is still a bit green…I can get a bit nervous about big life changes (such as a new baby on the way). This weekend was a great chance to slow down and appreciate the little things. Someday, oh someday, I’ll have to take up gardening…

I love this post. Autumn days are perfect for slowing down and appreciating the harvests. I adore O’s Seahawk dress. It finally fits her!
