I wanted to take a few photos of Baby O in this ear-flap hat I recently crocheted for her…Notice how freakishly long the “ties” are?? I must have been daydreaming while I was crocheting those, but it still looks rather cute on her, so I left them alone. It is a basic earflap hat, with edging, ties, and handmade pom-poms (I like the “fork” method for making them). If you want any more details on how to make something similar, just shoot me an email or leave me a comment about it.
So, I couldn’t wait for ideal lighting on this particular day. She wanted to play outside (and our neighbor had some amazing leaves on the lawn, and I was afraid they would be raked up if I waited too long). So, we trotted outside around 1-2pm to play with leaves (and I with my camera).
Photo Tip: If you are taking portraits of your child, you will want to wait until the sunlight is even, or find yourself a nice patch of shade. You can see on the below-right photo that her face has some harsh shadows on it (because we weren’t in the shade). Still, I couldn’t resist sharing it. She was just so “in her element” during this little session…
…And then she got mobile! My little One Year Old is quite the mover & shaker these days. She is walking fairly well and, when she gets tired of that, she resorts to her usual “crab” crawl. Here she is pointing to things she’s interested in, crawling, eating dirt, you know – the usual….
…on the move…

Photo Tip: We went inside for a little break, and came back out an hour later. The sun is behind a cloud, and the light is softer. I love the way she looks in these next few…So “her”…

She’s really into carrying sticks around with her. She carries one around quite often these days. Here, she’s crawled over to our (somewhat SAD looking, leaf-less fig tree) and is very excited about trying to hold it and wiggle it.
We bought and planted this fig tree (above and below) when we found out we were pregnant with her. We thought it would be a cool thing for her, especially if we’re able to harvest any fruit from it in years to come. Right now, it just looks kind of cold and fragile…
And, then she climbed right up the front steps to our door, as if to say she was ready to go inside now. Man, I’m loving this “stage”. She is getting so much better at communicating what she wants. She’s a rather peaceful, yet adventurous/curious little kid. It will be so interesting as she learns to talk and communicate with us even more in the coming months…

Hope everyone’s having a great week! First week of the New Year…I’ve been to the gym more times than I went all of last month (maybe a slight exaggeration), and am in the process of organizing our home. Man, does it need it! I hope to start painting rooms next month, and will perhaps start posting photos of some simple/crafty remodeling projects along the way this year. Here’s hoping anyway! Have a great weekend!

Hello! Beautiful shots! I was wondering what kind of camera and lenses you use for portraits like these. Time to ditch the point & shoot for a DSLR, I think
Hi Sarah, Great question & thank you for your comment. I use the Canon 5D Mark 2. I would really recommend a DSLR for children’s portraits…To me, personally, Canon is a bit more user-friendly, but you can’t go wrong with either Nikon or Canon. Let me know if you’d like any more feedback…I’m happy to share my thoughts on cameras & equipment.
